If you would like to see the major primates in their natural habitat, Rwanda is the ideal place to go. The 10 day fun filed tour will begin right in the capital of Rwanda Kigali into Akagera national park for the best birding you will ever encounter, then the chimpanzee trek in Nyungwe not forgetting the trilling mountain gorilla trekking and finally relaxing at the beaches of Lake Kivu.
Day 01 Arrive in Kigali
You will be received as soon as you set foot at the airport. From here you will be taken to Lemigo hotel where you will be spending the night. After resting for a while you will be taken to tour the city of Kigali, memorial sites for the devastating genocide and the national museum as well. You will be amazed at what it takes to keep a city so quiet and calm yet it is not short of activities.
Day 02 Kigali ~ Akagera National Park
Driving from Kigali in the morning to Akagera national park in the morning, you will encounter large numbers of different bird species in Akagera and for bird lovers this will over whelm you. The meandering course of River Akagera that fades out of a labyrinth of swamps and lakes just gives off a very unique set of nature and environment that cannot be found elsewhere. You will spend the night at Akagera game lodge for 2 nights.
Day 03 Kigali ~ Akagera National Park
Today will be a day for enjoying a game drive around the park looking exceptional members of the wild especially more and more birds of all sizes and be on the lookout the shoebill stocks and papyrus gonolek.
Day 04 Akagera National Park ~ Nyungwe Forest National Park
You will leave Akagera in the morning and head to Nyungwe national park. On your journey you will pass by Nyanza palace as which was the seat of the feudal monarchy which now serves as a source of income through tourism. You will also pass by Butare where you will see the national museum, several research institutions and universities.
Day 05 Nyungwe Forest National Park
This day will be spent trekking chimpanzees and enjoying a canopy walk in the dense montane rain forest which boosts for its rich flora and fauna.
Day 06 Nyungwe Forest National Park ~ Lake Kivu
Today we shall leave Nyungwe for Lake Kivu where you will enjoy on the largest freshwater lake in Rwanda.
Day 07 Lake Kivu
This day will see you explore the lake towns of Lake Kivu including Kibuye and Gisenyi. You will enjoy fun filled activities on the lake like boat rides as well as birding. You will also be able to visit the lake town markets where you will buy different items for yourself and for the people back at home too. You will then spend the night at Lake Kivu Serena hotel.
Day 08 Lake Kivu ~ Volcanoes National Park
The climax of the tour will be trekking the mountain gorillas in Ruhengeri at the volcanoes national park. You will leave Lake Kivu and head to Ruhengeri where you will spend 2 nights at Mountain gorilla view lodge which is just outside the park. You will also interact with the local people and also get an opportunity to be entertained to.
Day 09 Volcanoes National Park – Gorilla Tracking
Gorilla trekking will need you to get up so early for an early morning breakfast and thereafter go to the park’s headquarters. At the headquarters you will be briefed by the chief ranger about gorilla etiquette and also assigned a gorilla family that you will be visiting.
The ranger assigned to you will lead you into the forest and depending on the location of the gorillas, trekking them could take from 2 to 6 hours before you can find them. Once you get them, you will then be given a maximum of an hour in their presence as the game ranger describes for you everything there is to know about them. Having enjoyed these animals, you will head back to get something to eat and rest and thereafter go to the local community for be entertained and learn about the Rwandan culture.
Day 10 Depart from Kigali
We shall leave Ruhengeri today and head for Kigali driving past neat cultivated farmlands on the slopes of the highlands. Plantations of bananas, tea and coffee can be seen and this is spiced up by children who wave cheerfully at every passing vehicle. You will then be taken to the airport where you will catch your flight back home having enjoyed such a great trip to Africa’s small yet beautiful nation.
